Medical Acupuncture

Medical AcupunctureAcupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that has been practiced for centuries all around the world. Acupuncture uses very fine needles gently inserted into specific body points to stimulate flow of natural healing energy called Qi.

Acupuncture works by stimulating the release of chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals may change the experience of pain or trigger the release of hormones to alter the body’s own internal regulating systems. Improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture leads to increased natural healing as well as physical and emotional well-being.

Medical acupuncture differs from traditional acupuncture in that it is done by a physician. The advantage is that the physician can integrate acupuncture therapies along with conventional western medical therapies in a complementary fashion to promote healing benefits. Pain control, stress reduction, health revitalization and reducing medication side effects can all be improved through the use of acupuncture.

Medical AcupunctureA common question we are asked is about the acupuncture needles… Our acupuncture needles are individually packaged, sterile and used only once. They are extremely thin and flexible. It takes approximately 10-12 acupuncture needles to equal the diameter of one hypodermic needle. The number of needles required will depend on the condition being treated. Amount of treatments and length of treatments vary from person to person depending on response and severity of condition. The second most common question we are asked is…does it hurt? Usually the only discomfort is from the initial insertion of the needles. Many say it feels like a light pinch.

There are usually no side effects from acupuncture therapy. Some people experience deep relaxation or mild disorientation following a treatment. Other side effects may include a temporary increase in the original symptom(s), change in appetite, sleep, bowel or bladder patterns or a heightened emotional state. These are common normal body responses to acupuncture.

We promote an environment of healing and your session may also incorporate soothing music or a dimmed room. We hope your acupuncture treatment session will be not only healing but beneficial, relaxing and positive.
